Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about installing solar solar panels in Ireland.
How much do solar panels cost in Ireland?
It depends on the system size, whether you include a battery and if you're getting competitive quotes from trusted installers. The price can range from under €5,000 to over €10,000. Prices also vary a lot between installers, even for similar systems. That's why getting multiple like-for-like quotes matters. Enter your Eircode to check for your home!
What is the SEAI Solar Electricity Grant?
The SEAI Solar PV grant helps reduce the upfront cost of installing solar. The maximum grant is €1,800, and SEAI notes this cap will remain at €1,800 in 2026 under current policy. AirPV automatically calculates the grant for you based on your system size.
What are export payments and the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG)?
Under the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG), suppliers must pay you for surplus electricity that you export to the grid. Rates vary by supplier and plan but the average right now is around 20 c/kWh. AirPV includes this in the calculator to show you the full picture of your savings.
Do I need a battery with solar panels?
A battery is optional. The main benefit of a battery is storing your own solar electricity to use later, which means you rely less on the grid. But instead of storing it, you could export that electricity for about 20 cent/kWh. For this, a battery only saves the difference between what you’d earn and what you’d otherwise pay (typically around 35 cent/kWh). A standard battery adds about €2,000 to the system cost and usually leads to slightly longer payback times overall. That said, prices are falling, and AI-managed systems can unlock extra savings through energy arbitrage — charging when prices are low and discharging when high. These systems can reduce the overall payback time and are getting better all the time.
